For the final assessment in this unit you will be writing a design brief for a specific building project of your own selection. It can be either a complete brief or a partial section of a brief if you choose a large project.
The guideline length is 2500 words but you may exceed the limit if you choose to.
Suggested headings for your brief are:
• Executive summary / Vision Statement
• Objectives and expected benefits of the project • Project requirements and scope
• The site details
• Constraints
Under Project requirements and scope any of the following may be included:
• Space requirements
• Number and type of rooms
• Important relationships between rooms (Eg. Kitchens must be close to food serving
areas; Wet areas should be consolidated; Circulation space should be minimalised;
Etc.)
• Lighting and heating standards
• Utilities and IT requirements
Under Site details any of the following may be included:
• Site location
• Survey information denoting any encumbrances, easements, etc.
• Particular statutory or regulatory limits
• Adjoining property information
• Geotechnical information
• Climatic information
• Historical and/or heritage constraints
• Demographics.
Under Constraints any of the following may be included:
• Spatial constraints
• Regulatory constraints
• Functional constraints
• Environmental constraints
• Market constraints
